First post! I’ve already said a little on my about me page, but to summarize…
I’ve wanted to be a hospice nurse since before getting into nursing school. My sister and I were caring for our dying grandmother (Regina Weisgerber, shown here) and the nurse that visited her at home was so caring. She really inspired me.
I consider myself a realist. We’re all going to die! It may not be at the time we would choose or in the way we would choose (stinks we don’t all pass peacefully and unknowingly in our sleep). But when there is no choice other than to except the inevitable, I’ve been lucky enough to help so many people when they’ve really needed it.
People often say “I don’t know how you can do hospice, it must be so sad.” Of course death is sad, but can you imagine how fulfilling it might be to actually do good for a dying human being and the surrounding loved ones?
A good hospice nurse is caring, compassionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable about the dying process. Whether time with a patient and his or her caregivers is months, weeks, or days a hospice nurse goes from being a stranger to becoming a big part of another human’s last days on earth – and that is truly amazing.
I’m happy to be here – writing out thoughts about living and dying, and sharing a little knowledge along the way. If you have anything specific you’d like to know more about, please comment on any post.
